HyeSook Chung served as a Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services for Mayor Muriel Bowser. While servicing as Deputy Mayor, Chung led the effort to encourage coordinated administration’s effort to create a new community hospital to serve residents in Wards 7 and 8. Chung also oversaw the many economic development initiatives such as the expansion of Medicaid, TANF, and CHIP. Chung also was the chair of the Age-Friend DC Commission to bring more alignment of services and good for older DC residents. Prior to her appointment, Chung served as the executive director of DC Action for Children, a child advocacy organization working to brings high impact outcomes by analyzing and visualizing data in service to DC children. Ms. Chung has worked to improve the lives of children through direct service, program management, philanthropy and advocacy for the past 21 years. She has consulted for and advised numerous organizations including the DC State Board of Education and location foundations. Chung has served on numerous advisory boards focused on social change and outcomes for children and families, including Annie E. Casey's KIDS COUNT National Steering Committee, DC's Department of Health Care Finance’s Medical Care Advisory Committee, DATAKIND, The Smithsonian Institution's Anacostia Community Museum, Planet Word and the Regional Education Laboratory Mid-Atlantic Governing Board. She is a member of the Leadership Council for the Collaborative + The Classys and NationSwell. In addition to having expertise on issues that affect children and families, she is a data and technology enthusiast whose innovative vision for data work for high-impact social outcomes has been highlighted at IMB Insight Data Conference, the list of Rockefeller Foundation’s Top 100 Innovative NGO’s, Unicef, The Classys, Amazon, The White House, and SXSW Education. She received a Master of Social Work from Boston University with a concentration in non-profit management. She is a proud mother of two DCPS students.
